Welcome to Glenden

Located approximately 2 hours west of Mackay, a vibrant regional service centre, Glenden has a great life-style with attractions including a nine hole golf course, local mountain biking, horse events and regular community social attractions.

Glenden was built to service the Newlands Coal Mine and construction on the town began in 1982, with its first big influx of workers in January 1983. It is an open town administered by the Isaac Regional Council and it currently has a population of approximately 1300 residents.

The Queensland Place Name Board advised that in about 1918, the Lennon brothers drew a block in a land ballot and called it “Glenden”. Fifty-odd years later, Mount Isa Mines Limited proposed that a town to be called Glenden be built on property adjoining the Glenden Holding. Mount Isa Mines were then purchased by Xstrata who now operate the Newlands Coal Project and help maintain the Glenden Town and Community.  Glenden is frequently marketed and branded with a Bottle Tree Logo.

The Bottletree connection stems from an existing tree which the Newlands Mine has taken for its distinctive logo. During the mines construction phase, the Glenden to Newlands access road was diverted around this tree.
